On Friday (25th June), the MP for Witham, Priti Patel, paid a visit to Elm Hall Primary School, Conrad Road, Witham to meet Katie Mason, a pupil aged 11m who is a prolific reader. Katie set herself a challenge to become the school’s highest recorded reading millionaire and to see her name in print on the Elm Hall Wall of Fame. During the last academic year Katie has read 9 million words and the school is celebrating this success with her.

Priti met Katie and her teacher, Michelle Mansfield, for a special presentation as part of this celebration and presented her with a personal letter of acknowledging her great achievement. Katie also received a certificate of achievement from Head Teacher, Michael Wood and an e-reader and case gifted in recognition of achievement from Tina Townsend owner of Acacia Business Services Limited.

After the presentation, Katie and Priti were invited to share a Millionaires Cream Tea Party with the CEO of Attain Academy Partnership, Susannah Edom-Baker and Chair of Governors Jan Marshall, as well as Head Teacher Michael Wood and staff who have worked with her.

Commenting after her visit, Priti said: “It was a real pleasure to meet Katie and the staff at Elm Hall Primary School who have done so much to encourage her with her reading. As an MP who has championed the benefits of reading over many years, I was particularly impressed by Katie’s phenomenal accomplishment of 9 million words in one academic year. I expect to hear great things about her in the future.”

Mike Wood, Head Teacher said: “We were delighted that Priti was able to take time out of her busy schedule to join us to celebrate Katie’s achievement and to give us the opportunity to showcase Elm Hall’s reading programmes and strategies.
